THE POPPY CASCADE

The poppy cascade was on display from the Dedication Service on 7 October 2018 to 11 November 2018 when an evening service was held as a poppy finale. We had hundreds and hundreds of visitors to the poppy cascade and many appreciative and grateful comments in our visitors' book.

18,000+ poppies make up the cascade in the churchyard. It stands 6 metres high at its peak by about 18 metres long. The whole display is a dramatic yet poignant tribute which honours all those who died in or because of the wars.

With the display are:

  1. The banner made of poppies of "For The Fallen"
  2. 4 panels of commemorative labels with the names of those on the war memorials of Hayling Island and names of people's grandfathers, fathers, uncles etc, and other people who made a difference to the wars and to the lives of the families they left behind.
  3. The hand embroidery of the poem "For The Fallen". The 4th verse is well known for being spoken at many Armistice Day commemorations -

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
    We will remember them."
  4. A giant poppy made of poppies
